Does a Player Cut the Dealer’s Deck Prior to Dealing in Cribbage?

If you’re new to cribbage or revisiting the rules, you may find yourself wondering about some of the more nuanced parts of the game. I get this question more than any other: “Should a player cut the deck before the cards are dealt each round?”

Let’s break it down.

The Short Answer: No, cutting the deck is not required before dealing.

Unlike many card games that involve a cut before dealing (like poker or blackjack), cribbage does not traditionally include a deck cut as part of the pre-dealing process. Once the dealer is determined and the deck is shuffled, the dealer simply deals six cards to each player (or five in 3–4 player games), without a cut.

What the Official Rules Say:

According to the American Cribbage Congress (ACC) and other standard cribbage rulebooks:

  • There is no formal requirement to cut the deck prior to each deal.

  • The dealer must shuffle the deck thoroughly.

  • The non-dealer may request a reshuffle, but not a cut.

So, while cutting the deck may be a natural habit picked up from other card games, it’s not part of official cribbage gameplay.

What About Friendly House Rules?

Of course, cribbage is known for its friendly, social play. In casual settings or among friends, some people may include a cut for fairness or tradition. And that’s perfectly fine—house rules can vary and should always be agreed upon before play begins.

Just know that if you’re heading into a tournament or more formal play, a pre-deal cut will not be part of the process.

On a side note, players do cut the deck prior to the game to determine who deals first. Once the deck is shuffled, each player cuts a card and the player with the lowest card deals first. See is there an advantage to dealing first in cribbage?

Summary:

  • Cutting the deck before dealing is not required in cribbage.

  • Shuffling thoroughly is essential.

  • House rules can include a cut if all players agree.

💬 Cribbage Tip:

Instead of cutting, focus on a clean shuffle and deal, and keep the pace of play smooth and respectful. Cribbage is a game of strategy and tradition—but it’s also one of camaraderie and fun.
